Meet The Omnilux Contour

We’ve talked about LED Light Therapy here on the Blog and over on my Channel a few times in the past. In that time, I’ve used a few different LED devices - Nuface’s Wrinkle Reducer attachment, Lightstim’s handheld option, and a face mask from Project E. While I saw some improvement from these gadgets with continued use over many months, none of them seemed life-changing, which kept me searching for a better option. Enter the Omnilux Contour Face Mask.

Have you been to The OE Shop yet?! In case you didn’t know, I started my own eCommerce site where you can purchase my favorite tools and devices directly from me! This is a great way to support the Blog and Channel, which allows me to continue to making content for all of you.

Really Quick…

If you’re new to LED or want to learn more about this modality and what benefits each color of light offers, make sure to read this post or watch this video.

Long story short, LED Light Therapy is a form of photobiomodulation, meaning light is able to enter cells and alter cellular activity, particularly in the mitochondria (where cellular energy is created), triggering a cascade of biochemical reactions that lead to increases in cell proliferation (the making of new cells), triggering of collagen and elastin production (a key component to decreasing the look of aging), increases in blood flow and tissue oxygenation (which keeps skin healthy), and stimulation of cellular energy production, adenosine triphosphate or ATP (necessary for all cellular function), within the cell. This results in smoother skin, a reduction in wrinkles, higher skin moisture retention, evening of skin tone, and a reduction in pigmentation.

Now, not all LED Lights will create these results. Light photons of specific wavelengths, red at 633nm and near infra-red (NIR) at 830nm, offer the most compelling results and have been the focus of the majority of clinical studies. Not only are Red and NIR great at promoting anti-aging effects in the skin, they are also fantastic at promoting healing and reducing inflammation. Keep this in mind as we move forward.

You might be familiar with Blue LED Light, as it is widely used to treat acne and breakouts due to its anti-microbial benefits. While neutralizing bacterial overgrowth can be effective at reducing acne, it is not the only or even best treatment. Blue light also creates oxidative stress in the skin, something all LED light does to degrees, but Blue Light creates the most. This is the same reason people wear blue light blocking glasses and stop screen time before they wind down for the night. Oxidative stress triggered by blue light can affect our body’s circadian rhythm, suppressing the body’s melatonin production. Nothing terrifying but definitely something to think about. Personally, due to the amazing results I’ve been able to achieve with Red and NIF wavelengths, I skip Blue Light altogether since an anti-inflammatory response offers greater benefit to me than an antimicrobial one.

Okay, now back to my new favorite gadget…

The Omnilux Contour

Out of all the LED devices I’ve tried, this is my favorite. This at-home device is manufactured by Omnilux, makers of professional medical-grade devices. This sleek mask packs a big punch and can offer results after a single use, plus cumulative results from continued use. Made from anti-microbial silicone, the Contour, well, contours to your face. For LED to be most effective it needs to be as close to the skin as possible. (Keep this in mind the next time an esthetician charges you for an LED add-on during your facial, while the LED panel is a foot or two away from your face. A major pet peeve of mine.) It’s easy to use and, best of all, one treatment takes only 10 minutes, allowing the Contour to easily slip into your existing skincare routine.

What is Omnilux Contour Face Mask?

Based on the world’s leading Omnilux medical light therapy technology, the Contour Mask is a flexible, portable, affordable, FDA cleared for home-use mask. Contour uses red and near-infrared light-emitting diodes (LED) to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, increase skin hydration and improve overall skin tone and health.

How does it work?

Optimized energy output and two clinically proven wavelengths of light work on a cellular level to stimulate collagen, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the visible signs of aging and sun damage.

The mask is worn on the face and is held in place by an adjustable Velcro strap. The mask is controlled by a rechargeable controller that switches the LEDs ON/OFF and controls power to the mask. Because the device is powered by a rechargeable battery, you can wear the mask and move around, watch TV or write a blog post, while undergoing treatment. Each treatment lasts 10 minutes and can be done 3-5x a week.

How safe is it?

Over 40 clinical studies and nearly 20 years of Omnilux experience have proven that Omnilux light therapy is very safe, with no adverse side effects, no pain, and no downtime. Omnilux Contour FACE generates no heat and is safe for all ages and skin types.

This means all Fitzpatrick Skin Types, making the Contour a great option for someone contraindicated for other collagen stimulating therapies, like Radio Frequency. Not only does it not trigger pigment formation, but it can actually be used to break up hyperpigmentation (see clinicals at the end of this post).

What is the treatment regimen?

Omnilux recommends a course of 3-5 10-minute treatments per week, for 4-6 weeks. Then 2-3 treatments a week for maintenance.

Can I use it with my current skincare products?

Omnilux Contour FACE is compatible with most skincare routines. It can also be used in conjunction with other professional skin treatments such as micro-needling, peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments, injections, or fillers to optimize results.

OE Tip:

My skin has never looked as good as when I use this LED mask. I use my Contour mask after radiofrequency treatments and before microcurrent. Use the Contour on bare clean skin or after toning with an essence and applying Maysama’s Green Rooibos Pressed Serum. Make sure to avoid using your Contour over any photosensitizing products.

What Skincare To Use With Your Contour

Clinical studies have shown, pairing your red LED light therapy treatment with an antioxidant green tea cream can speed up the anti-wrinkle effects of the light treatment, giving results 10x faster than LED on its own. Research studies show that MAYSAMA’s green rooibos extract has a comparable antioxidant capacity to high-grade green tea.

Maysama Green Rooibos Pressed Serum

Maysama’s unique aspalathin-enriched Green Rooibos Extract is an antioxidant powerhouse, plus 3% niacinamide and an extensive line up of multi-tasking ingredients inspired by Korean Beauty, including Centella Asiatica, Sea-buckthorn and Liquorice, this antioxidant serum is formulated to protect and repair your skin from environmental damage and promote healthy skin.

Loaded with humectants, including pure Aloe vera gel, glycerine, and hyaluronic acid, and expertly balanced with dermal conditioners, such as argan and baobab oil, as well as Vitamin E, our lightweight gel serum is formulated to hydrate, soothe and nourish the skin, whilst minimizing oxidative stress and increasing cellular healing. Supporting more than 85% active ingredients, MAYSAMA Green Rooibos Pressed Serum packs a powerful punch for skin rejuvenation. With a pH of 5.0 to 5.3, free from essential oils, and no added fragrance, it is ideal for even the most sensitive skin.

What is Green Rooibos?

Green Rooibos comes from unfermented leaves and has a much higher antioxidant content than red rooibos, as the flavonoids have not been destroyed by oxidation.  MAYSAMA’s Green Rooibos Extract, with patented extraction, offers a bioactive ingredient with 70 x the antioxidant potential of organic rooibos.

Rooibos serves as an antioxidant powerhouse and antibacterial agent, as well as a rich source of alpha-hydroxy acid and zinc to fight off premature aging. The high content of flavonoids helps to reduce inflammation caused by oxidative stress, actively working to repair damaged skin and restore epidermal layers.

Why I love it

This bioavailable antioxidant not only enhances cellular resistance to oxidative stress and provides protection against apoptosis, cell death, but it also protects and repairs preadipocytes, the main fat cells in adipose tissue. It is my go-to serum to use in combination with LED light therapy.

Omnilux Hydrogel Face Masks

Specially designed to increase LED light penetration, these hydrogel masks hydrate the skin with hyaluronic acid, seaweed, and green tea extract.

Full transparency, there are multiple forms of glycol in this mask, including PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil which the EWG rates as a 3. I’ve added clickable links to the ingredients in question down below. That being said, these masks do help increase the effects of the Contour Mask. Do what feels right for you. They come in a pack of 3 for $29. I’ve included them in the LED Starter Kit, free of charge, so you could try them and see if it’s something you’d like to incorporate into your routine or not. While not available on The Shop, I have a bunch and am happy to sell them to you if you’d like some, just shoot me an email.

How To Incorporate The Contour Into Your Routine

Since each treatment only takes 10 mins, adding the Contour into your current skincare routine is easy. You can use the Contour morning or night. I love doing a Contour treatment in the evenings, especially towards the end of the night, as it’s wildly relaxing.

  1. Cleanse skin.

  2. Apply Essence or Toner.

  3. Apply a hydrating serum and/or an antioxidant serum, such as Maysama Green Rooibos Pressed Serum. Do not apply anything with photosensitive ingredients.

  4. Strap on your Contour and either multitask or, my personal favorite, lie back, close your eyes and relax. The light will automatically turn off after 10 mins.

  5. Apply any additional serums.

  6. Apply eye cream.

  7. Apply a facial oil and/or a moisturizer.

  8. Apply SPF if using your Contour in the morning.

  9. Finish with a Lip Treatment.
